Tourism and Event Management

UC SSC Lake Ginninderra Tourism and Event Management is a Tertiary, Accredited and a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course, which offers students a Certificate II in Tourism while studying at the College.

Students are offered excursions, including the annual CIT TASTE event where they experience firsthand the Tourism and Event Management courses on offer at CIT. Other destinations include Questacon and Visit Canberra.

Tourism students help manage and run College events. For example, the annual College Open Night event and the first Global Classroom conference, involving 55 overseas students and teachers who were hosted by the College for ten days in April 2017.

Students have the opportunity of accelerating their certification by completing a Structured Work Placement (SWL) during their course in a travel agency, tour company or visitor centre.

UNITS

Tourism and Event Management

This unit includes the skills and knowledge required to develop and up-date knowledge of the industry, focusing on sourcing and providing destination information relating to tourism in Australia. This unit also includes the interpersonal, communication and customer service skills required for selling and advising on products and services and providing visitor information. It also enables students to design, plan and implement an event.

Global Tourism

This unit focuses on the customer service skills required to work in a socially di-verse environment as well as health, safety and security procedures. Students will also be sourcing and providing international destination and advice as well as accessing and interpreting product information.

Working in Tourism

This unit includes the interpersonal, communication and customer service skills required by all people working in the industry. These skills include working with colleagues and customers as well as producing word processed documents. It also further develops the skills and knowledge required to source and pro-vide destination information and advice to both Australia and International destinations.

Tourism and Events Promotion

This unit includes the skills and knowledge required to source and pre-sent information related to tourism and events promotion. The skills and knowledge required to organise and promote an event is covered in this unit. Students are also required to access and interpret product information relating to local tourism events. There is the opportunity for external study whilst still at College, to study online information systems at CIT.
