Background
The UCSSC Lake Ginninderra Lakers Academy Program (formerly known as Sports Development) has supported local, national, and international student‑athletes since the college opened in 1987 (see our Hall of Fame). A defining feature of the program is its longstanding partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), which has played a significant role in shaping the distinctive character of the college.
Through this partnership, staff have developed extensive expertise in supporting students to achieve success both academically and athletically. We recognise that the pursuit of elite sporting performance may require students to miss periods of schooling, and appropriate provisions are made to support students during these times. The core objective of the Lakers Academy is to develop confident, independent learners who are capable of managing the dual demands of elite sport and academic study. Students in the program also benefit from strong relationships with local, state, national, and international sporting bodies, providing valuable development and pathway opportunities.
Program Details
The Lakers Academy includes the Athlete Development course, which forms part of an academic package contributing to the award of the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate. The course is offered as both a Tertiary and an Accredited option.
Students participate in two structured sessions per week, which address:
- Academic requirements of the Athlete Development curriculum
- Goal setting and performance reflection
- Targeted exercise and rehabilitation programs to support sporting performance
Throughout the year, students engage in guest presentations and excursions designed to enhance learning and exposure to elite sporting environments. Every two years, the program also offers a major interstate excursion to visit elite sporting schools, professional sporting facilities, and guest speakers.
Students enrolled in the Lakers Academy are expected to represent the college in their chosen sport, including participation in:
- Inter‑College Competitions (Thursday afternoons)
- Gala Days
- One‑Day Tournaments
It is important to note that the Lakers Academy does not provide sport‑specific training. Students are expected to maintain their elite training commitments outside of school. The focus of the program is on athlete development and wellbeing, including academic support to ensure progress and success. Remaining class time is designed to support students in managing their broader academic responsibilities.
Costs
Students are required to purchase a customised Lakers Academy polo shirt, at an approximate cost of $55. Additional costs may apply throughout the year, as students may represent the college at various sporting events or participate in excursions aligned with the goals and objectives of the program.
Joining the Lakers Academy
Information about the Lakers Academy is available through the UCSSC Lake Ginninderra Health, Outdoor Education and Physical Education (HOPE) Faculty. Upon receiving an offer of placement at the college, students may register their interest in the program and submit supporting documentation outlining their sporting performance history and future development goals.
The Lakers Academy is open to athletes across all sports. Students who are current state representatives in their sport will be accepted automatically. Students who do not hold state representative status are still strongly encouraged to apply and provide the relevant supporting information.
