The AST
The ACT Scaling Test (AST) is used in the ACT to fairly rank year 12 students for university entrance. It assesses general reasoning and problem-solving skills, not specific subject knowledge. The test measures skills necessary for success at university.
The AST includes a multiple-choice test, a short-answer test, and a writing task. All students studying for an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) must take it. The results help scale scores across different schools and subjects, ensuring fair comparisons. The AST doesn’t determine final grades but helps calculate each student’s ATAR, which universities use for admissions. It aims to ensure equity across diverse learning environments.
